Learn to eFoil
Is eFoiling hard? Your first lesson, step by step
No. You don't need any surfing, wakeboarding or other board-sport experience to learn to eFoil. In our Beginner course you start lying down on the board, move on to kneeling, then standing, and only then lift off — at your own pace, with your instructor on the water. Everyone is different and conditions play a part, so we never promise a time: we move on when you are ready.
What is an eFoil?
An eFoil — short for electric hydrofoil — is a board with an underwater wing and a quiet electric motor. As you pick up speed, the wing lifts the board clear of the surface. You set the speed with a handheld remote and steer with your body. No wind or waves needed.
Your first lesson at a glance
Briefing on shore.
Your instructor explains the board, the wing and the remote, and shows you how to fall safely.
Lying down.
You get to know the equipment and find your balance.
Kneeling.
You work on body position and control at low speed.
Standing.
You move from kneeling to standing, with short, clear guidance from your instructor by radio.
Lift and glide.
Speed comes last and stays in your hand. The goal of the Beginner course: stand up, glide in a straight line and hold a controlled speed.
Four tips for your first flight
Weight on the front foot.
You steer an eFoil more with the front foot than a surfboard. Too much weight at the back lifts the nose, so when in doubt, press down through your front foot.
Keep the speed steady.
The wing under the board needs a constant speed. Hold the trigger of the remote evenly, also while you move from kneeling to standing.
Fly low and short.
Lift off just above the surface, a few metres at a time, then touch down again. That is the safest and quickest way to learn.
Jump clear when you fall.
If you lose your balance, don't fight it: let go of the trigger and jump away from the board, in the direction you are riding.
These tips follow Fliteboard's guidance for first-time riders. On the water, your instructor guides you by radio.
Falling is part of it
Everyone falls. It is part of learning to fly. We show you how to fall away from the board and the wing, so it feels normal, not scary.
Who can take part?
The minimum age is 16, and you need no board-sport background. You need to be able to swim, and you always ride with an impact vest. There is no upper weight limit: as long as you can be physically active, you can ride. If you have a health condition or any concern, tell us before you book.
How long does it take?
Everyone is different, so we don't promise a time. As a rough guide, Fliteboard, the maker of our boards, says most people can learn in under an hour with a lesson, and that it might take a few sessions before you feel comfortable foiling.
eFoil or wing foil?
An eFoil has a motor. You need no wind, there is no wing to hold, and you don't have to pump the board up and down to stay on the foil: you set the speed with the remote and can simply stand and find your balance.
